Food For Thought

Let’s talk about health and healing, the politics of health and medicine, and what is working and not working.

The Girl in the Cafe

By Karen Ferguson

Some afternoons are made for a movie.  It was that time for me.  I won’t tell you how many times I’ve put in “The Girl in the Cafe” while making the bed or ironing or cleaning and listened to it: my husband would say “too many.” :-)  But, it’s one of those movies [HBO] that I learn something from each time I see it.

Without giving away the movie, it’s about love and politics. Bill Nighy [Love Actually, another excellent film] stars in it along with Kelly Macdonald. They go off together to a very important [in real life, a real world meeting] gathering of leaders to talk about the top problems of the world and their solutions.  Gina [Kelly] steps in to challenge them to be ‘great.’  It’s poignant, sweet, touching, painful and straight-shooting.

I watch it because it inspires me to be uncomfortable, to go forth without a path, and to take what comes as a direct result.  Not knowing “what’s next” always has its anxieties that go along with it, but the rewards…well, they can be and usually are, profound. And, if not, then well, later.  I chalk it up to “seed planting.”

I was wondering what books, movies, plays or people do that for you as I can use those guides, too.   Mentors, no matter what their appearance, offer courage each day.  So  instead of slipping and sliding alone, my path is a bit more firm and my direction a bit more steady, going forward.  And, when its NOT, I have the guides to look up again for back-up because there is always someone who has gone before me.

Living life in service is contagious because its so exciting….Who doesn’t want to add glee to their lives?  Life is a trip……who needs coffee?!  :-)

It has taken me years to unlearn much of what I learned about psychology and health. Suffice it to say, I believe in home schooling, the work of Price, Fallon, Enig and Cowan and one's right to be happy in one's life. My husband and I live in Sunnyvale, CA with seven fabulous cats. They teach us to take a nap when the urge strikes, to eat heartily when hungry and to stretch into the new day. La Vida es Bueno!

  1. Most certainly my most inspired, life changing movie experience was watching “The Civilisation of Maxwell Bright”. An amazing Indy American movie. I love it ’cause it reminds me what my purpose on the planet is. And nothing, not even bad behaviour from others, should sway me from that purpose. To Love. The woman in this movie lives such impersonal service that she saves her man from his self made hell without even trying to. She has no requirements and no expectations but he flowers under her love. So beautiful. I’ll have to have a look around for the girl in the cafe. I’ll let you know my thoughts/feelings.

  2. Thanks, Joanne, I can’t wait…another inspiring movie. That’s what I need!! Can’t wait…oh, I said that already. :-)
    Thank you!
