Let’s talk about health and healing, the politics of health and medicine, and what is working and not working.

Sipahh Straws…

By Karen Ferguson

The image “http://www.diet-blog.com/archives/sipahh.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.Since 1929, Flavor Aid drink mixes have been known for their great flavors, fun and value. Marketing slogan.

My huge apologies for being part of a country where our industries send over something like Sipahh Straws conprised of:  tapioca starch, sugar, artificial flavor, ace-k and sucralose.

Frankly, I’m mortified.  In a previous post, I threatened to come back to this blog as a Canadian, sigh, I’m getting closer & closer to that decision as I type.  You should probably be aware that McDonalds has shipped them to New Zealand and Australia to go in their Happy Meals.  I’m not happy about this situation.  :-(   Where’s Joanne?  Is she back  from seeing Sally Fallon yet??  I feel like running to her and tugging on her shirt and say “Fix it.”  Please.  :-)  But, I can do this: I’m writing a letter to corporate and challenging them on this atrocity. Then, I’m going to cc it to every place I can think of that may make a difference. After that, I’m going to look up ace-k and see what in blazes name that ingredient is comprised of…I’m ready so I must be off shortly.

There’s some good news here somewhere.  I’m traveling to the South next week, where for a week, I’ll be a minority.  It’s good for the soul, eh?!  I’ll get to hear country blues with my favorite band Willie King and the Liberators and be in the fields of small towns attending two blues festivals.  I love the blues music of the South.  I’ll camp and see year old friends and hang out. I’ll stay away from Southern ice tea that I got hooked on last year, too.  *chuckle*

I asked the woman behind the counter, “What’s the recipe?”  She said that they “start out with good black tea and dissolve sugar in it until no more dissolves.”  hahaha!  I didn’t laugh in the restaurant, I laughed outside..at myself and how much I had enjoyed my first glass.  I now had 2 frozen gallons of it to give away to my yet unmet, new friends. I’ve got to take something different to share this time.  I’m still laughing.

I wonder sometimes if attempting to eat differently is an elitist past time, while coming out of Whole Foods and dropping $85 bucks a bag. Fortunately for us now, the garden is in full bloom and we relish and appreciate it.  I’m also in the process of shopping within the local Weston Price co-op.  So, quickly the answer comes and it’s a  is a resounding “NO!!”  Taking care of oneself is a good thing.  And, if I can help just one person stay out of the hospital , where all the germs are, well, then, that’s a good thing too.

For now, it’s important for me to look at the cup as half full instead of half empty.  :-)  Color me happy to be here. Oh, I’m going to go to Waldorf school for a week this summer to see if the training is something I want to research and do in the Fall.  I’m excited.  More about that another time. And, do drop me your opinions.

Dig you all.  As always, its been a pleasure.  Hugs from California.

It has taken me years to unlearn much of what I learned about psychology and health. Suffice it to say, I believe in home schooling, the work of Price, Fallon, Enig and Cowan and one's right to be happy in one's life. My husband and I live in Sunnyvale, CA with seven fabulous cats. They teach us to take a nap when the urge strikes, to eat heartily when hungry and to stretch into the new day. La Vida es Bueno!

  1. Oh My Goddess. They should be illegal. I just received Barbara Kingslover’s new book in the mail, Animal Vegetable Miracle: our year of seasonal eating. She eats locally and seasonally. Can’t wait to get my teeth into it.

  2. They are here as well
    - I just thought another horrible sugar /additive /crap to get our kids addicted to…

  3. Oh! Thanks Joanne, I needed a book for the plane…I’m off to look it up at my fav used and new book store.
Hope to read a write up of Fallon’s talk and your experience.
    Best!

  4. Hi Karen - if you (or your readers) would like to know what ace-k is just follow these links (Watch out, they make for some hard reading).

    The Negative View: http://www.sweetpoison.com/aspartame-sweeteners.html

It is hard to know what information is correct or how to interpret the gazillion nutrition messages directed toward our eyes and ears every day. In this case, how do we, to quote Joanne from Nourished “do what we are told”? How do we know what is right for us and our children when the “telling” seems to direct us along disparate paths?

My answer is to stop… reduce the amount of information you are processing and make the decision a simple one. Look at your child. Reflect on your love for them. Lightly ruffle the feathers in your heart that belong only to them. Will you give them a Sipahh straw or find a little time to make them a chocolate milk shake using quality ingredients that do not include artificial flavours or sweeteners like Ace-K?

    Makes every decision easy.

  5. Sucralose - that can be nasty stuff too. Did you know a lot of the flavoured fish oils aimed at kids have sucralose in them? It’s not on the label either, you have to check the website or contact them.

  6. You hit it straight on, Kay. I couldn’t agree with you more. Sally Fallon made sense of it all for me. She kept it so simple when I attended her seminar in Vancouver BC last spring. Amazing.
    You have done the same…..
    Thank you!
